While at Coachella, Under the Radar caught up with M83 keyboardist (and sometimes contributing blogger) Morgan Kibby to discuss her solo project, White Sea. We learned that M83’s Anthony Gonzalez may appear on a forthcoming White Sea track. (via M83’s Anthony Gonzalez May Appear on a White Sea Track | Under The Radar)

2012 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival

I wish I were cool enough to go to these places because off the top of my head, off this list, I’d pretty much kill to see The Black Keys, Bon Iver, Florence + the Machine, The Weekend, Girl Talk, The Hives, Santigold, Wild Flag, Fitz and the Tantrums, Fanfarlo, Sleeper Agent, Grouplove, The Vaccines, We Were Promised Jetpacks, The Big Pink, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs, Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra, Arctic Monkeys, M83, Girls, The Rapture, The Horrors, Yuck, Dawes, Gotye, and Neon Indian.
Just to name a few.
Come to think of it, about a dozen of these kids are on the soundtracks for The Survivors: Point of Origin, and for the secretly-titled book 3 that I’m working on now. So. There’s that.
For your listening (and educational) pleasure, I’ve put together this Coachella playlist on Spotify. You’re welcome.

Has anyone else gotten their issue yet? What cover did you get?

All three of these cover artists, and all of the other artists mentioned on that cover (especially St. Vincent and Florence because I love me some chicks rocking out.) (not to discredit PJ Harvey’s wisdom) are artists I fell hard for or continued falling hard for in the last year. I’ve never been on tap with music enough to have the problem of liking someone before their songs make it to iTunes or before I can get a full length album or what have you but I’ll never forget when I heard “Still Life” (Horrors) for the first time and could only find it in video form.

Anyway, you should check out anyone listed on any of these covers. No, really. I’m a little shellshocked that they didn’t include Lana del Rey (who Jenny Eliscu already only refers to as LDR), but I guess magazines have long leads and so I can put money on who I’m pretty certain will be on the best of 2012 cover. Or one of them.

So I guess this just turned into a listening party. If you want music to listen to today, open your handy little Spotify app or, better yet your wallets and your iTunes store!, and make a playlist of these geniuses:

The Horrors

M83 (their album has been on more best of 2011 lists, big and small, than  ANYONE’s. Really.)

Bon Iver (duh)

St. Vincent (Cru-uh-oo-uh-oo-ooool-uh-huh) (You’ll know what I mean.)

Beirut (“East Harlem” and “Santa Fe” are favorites…and singles, I’m pretty sure)

Florence + the Machine's latest (“Seven Devils wrote a GIANT segment in Survivors’ Book 3 that I’m currently writing so, thanks babe. “No Light, No Light” is also very Cole Hardiwck)

Neon Indian (It is Polish or polish? You be the judge.)

PJ Harvey, who Jenny Eliscu, the bestest DJ / music journalist / music ambassador in the world, refers to as the original indie rock chick.

R.E.M. (I’m assuming because they tore their little selves apart this year but who doesn’t love “Losing My Religion” hmm?)

Tuneyards (It takes a certain kind of patience for these kids. Don’t be bummed if it’s not your thing, but embrace it if it could be!!)

Yuck (They’re an amusing kind of golden)

…and…

SBTRKT who I have heard very little of but sense I probably need to hear more of given the company they’re in on this list.

Oh right, and LANA DEL REY BECAUSE SHE IS MAGICAL. Do it. Now.
